Hello! This articles is telling about languages in Ukraine.
Ukraine has one official language- Ukrainian. "Thanks" to our USSR past all people understand Russian and about 24% of population speak Russian, especially in cities like Kyiv, Donec'k, Odessa. Ukrainian language is dominant in Western Ukraine (L'viv, Ivano-Frankivs'k). English is being studied at schools so younger people of big cities can understand and can say some words in English.
As for services sector English situation is pretty poor. USSR payed not enough attention to studying foreign languages at schools so the most of staff, shop-assistants don't understand English and can't give any information. But that situation isn't so bad thanks to supermarkets where you don't have to speak to shop-assistants. But You can have problem with reading labels with prices. Somewhy, at most of cases they are placed not near the goods they are pointing to.
So, it's better to remember the names of the goods you will ned to buy in a supermarket before going for shopping.
Good luck! |
