Ukraine. Admissional process for foreign students to Lviv Polytechnic National University.
National University "Lvivska Polytechnica" is one of the oldest higher educational establishments of Europe. In 2005 it celebrated the 160th anniversary of its foundation. The university main academic building, built in 1877, is regarded to be the architectural monument of the neoclassic style. The training of foreign specialists and masters for foreign countries began in "Lvivska Polytechnica" in 1961. More than 2500 specialists from 78 countries of Europe, Asia and Latin America have been trained in 32 specialities so far. The university is known for its European scientific and academic traditions. Nowadays more than 17 thousand students are following 37 courses leading to the award of a bachelor's degree and 90 courses leading to the award of a specialist's degree.160 Doctors of Science, professors and near 1000 Candidates of Science are working here. The university consists of 18 faculties, 4 institutes, the centre of professional orientation, 82 departments, the scientific library, the publishing house and is connected to the international network Internet. The university guarantees the high quality of knowledge and provides the possibility for realization of sport and art abilities. The preparatory department for foreign students"KOMPIS" In 1991 at the basis of National University "Lviv Polytechnic" the preparatory department for foreign citizens "KOMPIS" for study of Ukranian (Russian) language was created. It functions according to the licence of the Ukrainian Ministry of Education, series АА № 521897. For 16 years of its functioning citizens of 30 countries of the world have been prepared for study in many higher educational establishments of Ukraine, and are studying there or have successfully graduated. The study of foreign students is held on the basis of contracts with foreign citizens that want to study in "Lviv Polytechnic", or with foreign firms that have the licence of the Ukrainian Ministry of Education that gives them right to direct foreign citizens for study in Ukraine, as well as in accordance with the Ukrainian Ministry of Education direction on the basis of international agreements. Language Study Foreign citizens that do not speak Ukrainian are enrolled at the preparatory department at Lviv Polytechnic National University where they study: language, mathematics, physics, chemistry, history of Ukraine as well as other subjects according to the chosen speciality. Final examinations are to be passed at the end of the academic year. At the condition of successful passing of exams foreign citizens obtain the certificate that gives them right for further study at Lviv Polytechnic National University or in other educational establishments of Ukraine depending on the chosen speciality. The preparatory department "KOMPIS" for foreign citizens provides study and gives out certificates for entering higher educational establishments of Ukraine in following specialities: - engineering- technical - chemical - architectural - medicobiologic. Rules of visa accepting and registering Foreign citizens wishing to study at the preparatory department for foreign students "KOMPIS" at SU "Lviv Polytechnic" should submit the copy of the certificate of education with the list of subjects that have been studied and with examination notes or passing grades, as well as to fill in the application form. Foreign students for whom the question of study at the preparatory department "KOMPIS" has been positively settled are sent the originals of the invitations to study . The original of the invitation gives the right to address the embassy of Ukraine for registering the entrance visa to Ukraine. By absence of the embassy in the state where the invited person lives it is necessary to address the embassy of Ukraine in the nearest neighbouring country. The list of obligatory documents for foreign citizens that are coming for study in Ukraine Foreign citizens must have the following documents: The certificate of secondary education with the list of subjects that have been studied, as well as examination notes (passing grades) from these subjects. Medical certificate that proves the absence of AIDS-infection, according to the agreement between Ukraine and other countries, certified by the seal of the medical establishment that has right to hold such tests. Medical card that proves the absence of counterindications for study in the conditions of Ukrainian climate, certified with the seal of the medical establishment in the place of the foreigner's residency. The application form (filled in the University); The copy of the birth certificate; 6 photos - 6x4 cm size; 4 photos - 3x4 cm size; The passport; The entrance visa (according to the invitation of the University). The student that has come to Ukraine should have a return ticket home without the date of returning. Citizens that are coming for study present their documents personally. The term of obtaining Master's degree is 2-3 years (depending on the chosen speciality). Postgraduate study Graduating students who have obtained the Master's degree and shown good abilities in the scientific-research work have the possibility to defend the dissertation for obtaining the degree of the Candidate of Science. The term of postgraduate studies - 3 years. The beginning of study - the 1st of December. External studies Foreign citizens have the possibility for external studies at Lviv Polytechnic National University. External studies are held according to the individual plan. Academic facilities The study of foreign citizens is held in accordance with the education plans confirmed by the Ukrainian Ministry of Education at State University "Lviv Polytechnic" or according to the individual plans worked out and approved by the educational establishment and agreed according to the study contract. After graduating from the University students obtain a diploma that is internationally acknowledged and witnesses the level of acquired knowledge and the degree of qualification. Tuition feesThe year's study fee for foreign students is the following: Preparatory department "KOMPIS":1,000 dollars USA Study at the university:1,500-2000 dollars USA Post graduate study:3,000 dollars USA External studies:1,200 dollars USA The residence of foreign students Foreign citizens who have come for study at Lviv Polytechnic National University are provided with the possibility to live in the student hostel. Students can live either alone or two persons together. The payment for residence is 30 dollars USA a month. Additional informationThe right for entering the preparatory department "KOMPIS" of State University "Lviv Polytechnic" have citizens of the age under 35. Coming into Ukraine with visas filled in according to the invitations of the educational establishment is limited till the 15th of November of the current year. In the case of the admission to the study at the university foreign citizens should register according to the existing rules. The cost of registration per year of staying in Ukraine is 50$. The general cost of textbooks on the preparatory department is 20 dollars USA. The cost of the medical insurance (obligatory on the territory of Ukraine) is 100 dollars USA per year for one person. LEARNING UKRAINIAN (RUSSIAN) AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE “Compis”, the department of Lviv Polytechnic National University, which prepares foreign students for entering higher educational institutions of Ukraine, announces enrollment into the courses of learning Ukrainian as a foreign language. Learning Ukrainian as a foreign language is offered ways: - Individual training; - Permanent courses; - Summer school for students (26 June – 5 August ) In case foreign students show particular interest in certain aspects of Ukrainian life, we can offer additional courses in Ukrainian literature, culture, mass media and a business course. Learning materials for students The following textbooks, manuals and instruction materials will be used: “Вивчаємо українську” (“We learn Ukrainian”) is the manual for foreign students, postgraduates, interns and students for preparation departments. The manual was written by lectures and instructors of our university; a phonetic course of Ukrainian for beginners which contains a textbook, a set of audio cassettes and CDs; other manuals and textbooks for learning Ukrainian as a foreign language published in Ukraine. Accommodation We are well aware of how important it is for a person learning a foreign language abroad to live in comfortable condition. We have taken care of it and can offer 3 major options of accommodation: 1. Living with a Ukrainian family You will live in the apartment with all necessary conveniences. You will have a separate room at your disposal. You will be able to have breakfasts and dinners at the place and lunch somewhere else in the city. If you feel like living in the “Ukrainian speaking environment and being in close contact with Ukrainian culture and traditions, belling hospitality of your hosting family and tasting traditional Ukrainian dishes – this is just for you. 2. Living in the dormitory (of a hotel-type) You will live in the dormitory and have a modern comfortable suit with all necessary conveniences. The dormitory is located close to the university premises where you will have your classes. 3. A rented apartment You will live in an apartment will all necessary conveniences. You will have a bedroom, bathroom, a lavatory and a kitchen. If you want, the landlady will come in the morning and in the evening to cook your breakfast and dinner. Otherwise, you will be able to cook for yourself as well. You will also be able to live alone or share the apartment with another student if the apartment has several rooms. Our intensive program foresees studies according to three levels of language mastering: elementary, intermediate and advanced. Before starting studies testing is carried out, according to the results of which groups of three, levels are formed. The students who either studied or didn’t study the Ukrainian language before are enrolled to the courses. Classes will be held in the lecture room of the educational institution. The first academic level (elementary) (date). At foresees 60 hours of lecture time, 4-5 hours every day. Having finished the first level of language mastering, a student will be able to use basic grammar and vocabulary in short, simple sentences on everyday level, cope with simple phrases of Ukrainian etiquette and also to lead of the world conversation. The second academic level (intermediate) (date) At foresees 120 hours of lecture time, 4-5 hours every day. Having finished the second level of language mastering, a student will be able to use lexical minimum more efficiently will master, basic grammar deeper and will be able to satisfy simple working needs (do tasks and get simple information. The third academic level (advanced) (date) At foresees 120 hours of lecture time, 4-5 hours every day. The advanced course includes brash-up course of the Ukrainian language, as the result of which a student will be able to master basic grammar including some complex structures and vocabulary of different style coloring with a high level of accuracy. The student will be able to do business using Ukrainian and efficiently take part in both formal and informal talks on of the world and professional topics, where there are expected and familiar needs. The Students can take part in two periods of studies if these are either elementary and intermediate levels or intermediate and advanced levels. Studies can be conducted both in a group and individually. After finishing courses the students are tested and they are rewarded with certificates. Apart from studying language the students are offered 10 hours of lectures on update history of Ukraine, which will be delivered by leading lectures of Lviv Polytechnic National University. Studies of Ukrainian language also foresee communication in Ukrainian in host family and also meetings with representatives of the Ukrainian youth. Cultural program Our courses offer the students an interesting and various cultural program. You can get acquainted with Ukrainian folks crafts, arts and everyday life if Ukrainian people in the past in some Lviv museums, the largest of them being Lviv Museum of Ethnography and Folk Crafts and Lviv National Museum. The first printed Ukrainian books can be seen here as well. You will also be able to visit the Museum of Ukrainian folk architecture and Rural life in the open air which restores the landscape and the atmosphere of the Carpathian mountains and acquaints you with the life, history and traditions of the Ukrainians living in the Carpathians. There you see unique wooden churches that were built without nails, listen to religious singing, witness the ritual wedding and baptizing ceremonies. Lviv is famous for its architecture, its cathedral and churches in particular. The major temple of Rome Catholics is Latin Cathedral where you can be present during the service conducted in Polish and accompanied by organ. You can get acquainted with theatrical life of the city if you attend Lviv National Opera and Ballet Theater, the building of which thought to be one of the best architectural monuments in Europe. You can listen to national Ukrainian operas here – “Natalka Poltavka” and “Zaporozhets za Dunaem”, harmonious music and humorous plots of which reflect features of Ukrainian national character. Those who are fond of painting can visit Lviv Picture Gallery where one can see ancient Ukrainian icons, paintings of well-known Polish, German, Italian and Ukrainian artists of the 18th, 19th, 20th centuries. Exhibitions of modern artists, sculptors as well as photo exhibitions are organized in the Lviv Palace of Arts. The guests of our city are always interested in visiting Lychakiv cemetery, which is considered to be one of the oldest places of such kind in Europe. There one can see tombs of the outstanding people, old on-grade monuments and crypts. One has a chance to mix with Ukrainian young people in youth clubs “Lialka”, “Dzyha” and other where they organize special meetings with well-known modern Ukrainian writers, poets, and musicians. There are many old castles around Lviv, among them Pighorodetsky, Zolochvsky, Olesky castles. The best of them is Olesk Castle. This grand castle was the residence of polish kings. Strong fortification walls of the castle still remember enemy attacks, victories and defeats. At present there is the largest in Ukraine exposition of wooden sculpture here. You can taste medieval dishes in the dining hall of the castle and then enjoy the view of the surrounding landscape from the observation site.
